Dream-Lighter

Song by Virgile

(Verse 1)

I reach for my notebook to write a little song
It’s been weeks or maybe months, in any case it’s been too long

The pages lie pristine like a field cloaked deep in snow
And my thoughts collecting dust, because they’ve got nowhere to go

I just need one more coffee, I just need a little time
I need a moment to get ready; I just need to make it rhyme

If I practiced just a little more my voice would sound ok
But the endless daily grind, it steals my breath away

(Pre-chorus 1)

I would like to follow my dream
But I always seem
To lose it in a screen

(Chorus)

I need a Dream-Lighter
To make my dream brighter
I need a Dream-Lighter
To make my dream brighter
(x2)

(Verse 2)

I can’t find inspiration when I’m locked inside my thoughts
And I can’t just go forget it, ‘cause I know how talent rots

I sit with my guitar, and I know that I should play
But my fingers feel all clumsy, and end up in their own way

I want to take that break that I feel I don’t deserve
I wanna try something exciting, but I always lose my nerve
I’ll finish off this episode, this one will be the last
Then I’ll buckle down to work, but when I do, the moment’s passed

(Pre-chorus 2)

I would like to follow my dream
But I always seem
To lose it in a screen

(Chorus)

I need a Dream-Lighter
To make my dream brighter
I need a Dream-Lighter
To make my dream brighter

(x2)

(Verse 3)

I know if I could finish then this stress would go away
And I’d feel a little smarter and get better every day

Everything would come up roses, and I’d have the confidence
To follow all my dreams, just get up of this fence

No idea just how I did but one day the song is done
And I wait to feel a change man ‘cause I want to be someone

But the magic hasn’t happened, and my fears are still the same
My spark is for the demons; I know them each by name

(Pre-chorus 3)

Hopeless that my dream could it be
But I didn’t see
The lights inside of me

(Chorus)

I need a Dream-Lighter
To make my dream brighter
I need a Dream-Lighter
To make my dream brighter

(x2)

About Dream-Lighter

This song was created by Virgile in 2017 in the context of his application to the Songwriting Course at BIMM London University. It expresses the difficulties to find the inspiration and to create a song. It also highlights the possible dream of a songwriter to be able to create songs. It started with the idea and some lyrics during a trip to Japan when Virgile was inspired by the name of a plane by Boeing: Dreamliner. The initially created melody did not work well for the verses and thus had to be changed, but the pre-chorus and chorus remained identical. Alexandra helped finalize the lyrics.
